Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a broker?

Start with the licence: the broker should be regulated in an EU country or the UK, and you can check the licence in the regulator's register. Then compare the costs for what you will actually do, such as buying ETFs every month, not just the headline commission, and check that you can deposit in your own currency.

Is my money safe with a broker based in another country?

The shares and ETFs you buy belong to you and are held separately from the company's own money. If the broker goes bust, they are transferred to another broker, and uninvested cash is covered by the compensation scheme of the country that issued the licence, usually up to €20,000.

How much does it cost to invest through a broker?

Opening an account is free at most brokers. The costs come from trading commissions, currency conversion when you buy in a currency other than your account's, withdrawals and, at some brokers, inactivity fees. The fee table in every review shows them all.

Can I have accounts with several brokers?

Yes. Many investors use one broker for long-term ETF investing and another for shares or exchanges the first one doesn't offer. Keep track for tax purposes, as each broker issues its own reports.
